CBD for Arthritis Pain & Inflammation

If you live with joint pain, you’ve probably tried numerous means of finding relief. When every movement is uncomfortable, you feel limited. Suddenly, things you used to love don’t sound fun anymore. Even simple daily tasks, like walking across the house or opening a jar, feel daunting.

That’s part of why CBD has become increasingly popular in recent years. As a safe, natural treatment that has reportedly helped countless people with joint pain, it’s piqued the curiosity of many people with arthritis.

But is the evidence that CBD helps with arthritis pain purely anecdotal, or is there science to back it up? The latter, it turns out. Here’s your primer to finding effective CBD to help alleviate your arthritis discomfort.

The Science on CBD for Arthritis

First, it’s helpful to understand CBD. Cannabidiol — or CBD, for short — is one of the active ingredients in cannabis plants. But unlike THC, the ingredient with psychoactive effects, it doesn’t intoxicate you in any way. It’s safe for use by people and pets alike.

Because it’s plant-derived and safe for widespread use, researchers have been taking a careful look into CBD’s effect on a variety of health conditions. It’s been proven effective in treating epilepsy in children, for example. And increasing evidence is mounting that it helps to alleviate arthritis pain.

As you probably know, there are more than 100 different types of arthritis, and each affects your body differently. But CBD has been shown to be effective for a variety of different arthritis types. Let’s look at two of the most common types here:

The most prevalent type of arthritis, osteoarthritis develops as a result of wear and tear on your joints (specifically, the cartilage that cushions them) over time. You can’t turn back the clock, but you can use CBD to treat your symptoms and slow cartilage breakdown. One study found that CBD use resulted in a “significant reduction” in peoples’ OARSI score — which grades the progression and extent of osteoarthritis — in people with knee osteoarthritis. That study also showed a reduction in cartilage breakdown with CBD use.

Ultimately, more research is needed to make a conclusive call, but early studies are quite promising and show that CBD can help people with osteoarthritis experience less pain while slowing their condition’s progression.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

This type of arthritis develops when your immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of your joints, causing inflammation. It is this inflammation that causes you pain.

Studies have shown that CBD can help to alleviate both pain and inflammation, easing your symptoms while treating their root cause. Other research revealed that cannabinoids like CBD “can constitute a potent treatment modality against inflammatory disorders.”

Ultimately, because CBD can help to reduce inflammation with safe, natural treatment, it can be a help to people living with RA.
